My Hero: Jean-Michel Cousteau
Reviewed by Asma Malik (Cannes 2007)
Director: Jeanne Meyers Starring: Slater Kemker-Jewell (as herself), Jean-Michel Cousteau (as himself) Genre: Short film - Documentary Production Company: The My Hero Project, Inc.
In-a-nutshell: Slater Kemker-Jewell loves the ocean. Her hero is Jean-Michel Cousteau, a man who has spent his life working to protect and preserve the Earth's oceans, as did his father, Jacques Cousteau. Kemker-Jewell's short film project shares the story of her trip to Catalina Island to meet and interview her hero.
The film's content is similar to something children would watch in an elementary or middle school class - with the exception that it feels very real, unscripted, and is actually interesting. Close-ups on the ocean life add to the fascinating dialogue. Kemker-Jewell is engaging as she asks her questions to Cousteau, who responds with expert passion in his French accent.
The My Hero Project (www.myhero.com) is an online global community that produces short films, using the medium for children to share their heroes and explore the heroes of others. As student reporter Kemker-Jewell says in her short film, "It's a website for kids all around the world. They write in about their heroes, and it celebrates the best of humanity."
