Reviewed by Glenn Gaslin (Moving Pictures magazine, Dec. 2006/Jan. 2007) Starring Michael Caine. Directed by Guy Green, Peter Hyams, Bryan Forbes. Released by Fox Home Video. There may still be people on this Earth who haven't fully recognized the brilliance, the genius, the very firmly establish manliness of Michael Caine. Which is why this collection is necessary, why three little-known and new-to-DVD essays on the art of Caine need be unleashed on the world, brought here from the '60s and '70s. The effortlessly charismatic Caine hits stoic comedy in the send-up of noir thriller Peeper, complete with Natalie Wood's femme fatale and a Bogart impersonator. He wrestles wits with Anthony Quinn in The Magus, a twisted thriller set on a Greek island, and gets lost in the plot of stylish heist-gone-wrong Deadfall. There's no Alfie or Get Carter in the bunch, but you've seen those and there's so much more to Caine. A few dozen more collections like this, and they might have him covered. |
